INTRODUCTIONWelcome to the Lanam Club, or "Orlando" as it was formerly known. Built in 1916 on a luxuriant hillside overlooking the winding Shawsheen River below, the original house mirrored the vision and spirit of its owner, William M. Wood, late president of the American Woolen Company. This three-story, stucco edifice done in Spanish Colonial Revival style boasts of two basements, and steel beams in critical areas. The house was designed by Perley S. Gilbert and built by Chester S. Patten in 1916. Many items were procured from different regions of the country, including the second floor marble fireplace which came from the Fifth Avenue brownstone mansion of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt. The silver light fixtures came from Tiffany's in New York. The interior features intricate hand carvings on the quartered oak panels and on the balustrades and banisters between the floors. The ceilings on the first floor are of hand molded plaster with festoons of garland and rosettes. In 1957 "Orlando" became the Lanam Club and today is recognized as the finest business and social club in the Merrimack Valley. With its incomparably designed gardens and terraces, its irreplaceably elegant interiors and its superior food and service, the Lanam Club is an ideal location to celebrate that special occasion.
